Health alert issued for Costco burritos over ‘undeclared allergen’

Health officials have issued an urgent alert for burritos sold at Costco stores in multiple states due to a potential ‘undeclared allergen.’

The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert Wednesday for a Steak, Cilantro and Lime Burrito product because it contains egg, a known allergen that was not listed on the ingredient label.

The affected product was produced on June 19 and shipped to Costco distribution centers in Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota. 

It was sold in 3lb 2oz cartons containing 10 individually wrapped ‘RED’S STEAK CILANTRO AND LIME BURRITO’ on the front package label with the following production lot numbers on the side: L1 SD6170 1503, L1 SD6170 1535, L1 SD6170 1606, L1 SD6170 1639, L1 SD6170 1717, L1 SD6170 1750, L1 SD6170 1831, L1 SD6170 1908, L1 SD6170 1954, L1 SD6170 2031, L1 SD6170 2108, L1 SD6170 2130.

The individual burritos have the establishment number ‘EST. 46069’ printed inside the USDA mark of inspection. 

FSIS said a recall was not requested because the products are already no longer available for purchase.

However, the agency noted it is ‘concerned that some product may be in consumers’ freezers.’ 

Consumers who purchased the burritos should not eat them and should instead throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.

There have been no confirmed adverse reactions or illnesses linked to the products, but people exposed to an allergen such as eggs may experience anaphylaxis, an immune system overreaction that causes hives, swelling, wheezing, shortness of breath and difficulty swallowing.

A person experiencing an anaphylactic reaction can go into anaphylactic shock when their blood pressure drops dangerously low, causing vital organs, especially the brain and heart, to become starved of oxygen-rich blood.

The throat, tongue, and voice box can also swell shut, physically blocking any air from entering the lungs. The muscles around the bronchial tubes in the lungs, which help carry air, constrict, squeezing the airways shut, suffocating the person to death. 

An epinephrine auto-injector, known as an EpiPen, is the first-line and most effective treatment to stop the progression of anaphylaxis. 

About 3 million Americans have an egg allergy, and it is the second most common food allergy in children, affecting nearly one percent of kids in the US. However, about 70 percent of children outgrow it by the time they are teenagers.

The health alert is one in a series of recent warnings regarding foods with undeclared allergens.  

Earlier this year, Fly by Jing Creamy Sesame Noodles were pulled from Whole Foods shelves due to the potential presence of undeclared peanuts. It’s unclear if any illnesses resulted from that recall. 

In May, FSIS issued an alert for Giovanni Rana Rustic Beef Sauce & Creamy Burrata Cheese Ravioli. The ravioli is labeled as beef and burrata but it may actually contain shrimp filling in lobster sauce due to a labeling and packaging error. 

No illnesses were reported from that error.
